Weekly Round-Up 1/7/2018

Here we are folks! The first round-up of the new year. Quick weather update: the temperature here in Fargo has barely crept over 0 Fahrenheit this past week. Apparently we might actually see a double-digit high today, fingers crossed. To celebrate the New Year, the battery died in one of our cars, but thanks to YouTube I was able to change it out myself even with a temperature of -6 in my garage. Gotta love living in a northern climate. Let’s get to the numbers now.

TBR – The year opened with a total of 277. I finished reading 2 books this week and added 1. The new total is 276. Not a terrible start.

Goodreads challenge – I set my goal at 100 again for this year. The 2 books I finished puts me ahead 1 book as of today.

NetGalley score – I didn’t read any NetGalley books this week so score remains at 87%.

JohnConnolly challenge – I am currently listening to book 3 in the series “The Killing Kind”.

Coming up – This year I am actually scheduling my reading. This week I will be reading “Kings of Georgian Britain” by Catherine Curzon, Kings of Georgian BritainUnwanted” by Andrew Young, Unwanted and “The Killing Kind” by John Connolly. The Killing Kind My reading year is off to a good start, I just hope I can keep it that way.

Happy Reading! and stay warm!

Happy New Year Round-Up and Preview!

Happy New Year Round-Up and Preview!

It’s Sunday again, but it’s also New Year’s Eve! 2018 brings a lot of big events for my family. My husband will turning over a new decade in March, my son will be graduating from high school and turning 18 in May, one of our nieces is getting married in August, and my husband and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in September. It also looks like several family members will be making the trek to North Dakota, for the first time, for the graduation so we might just have one big party to celebrate the whole year. So let’s look at my numbers as the year is ending and take a peek at what I planning on doing with books in 2018.

TBR – I added 1 book this week and finished 3, so the TBR ends 2017 at 277. To my knowledge there are no books winging their way to me and no outstanding NetGalley requests so I’m pretty confident in that number. This includes all the unread books I own, whether they be print, e-book or audiobook.

Goodreads Challenge – I slipped this year, only managing to complete 99 out of the 100 books I had challenged myself too. While I would like to think that I will finish one more before midnight, I know myself better than that. I will be setting a new 100 book challenge for 2018.

NetGalley score – Great progress was made here. I started the year at about 68% and I’m ending the year at 86% (no I did not just transpose the number). My goal for 2018 is to cross the 90% line.

Favorite Books of 2017

Mystery/Thriller – “Poison” by Galt Niederhoffer – this one continues to stick with me, I think because it felt so real.

Non-Fiction – I was absolutely fascinated by the story of “The Radium Girls” by Kate Moore.

Historical Fiction – Loved the characters in this story of a young immigrant working in the Carnegie household – “Carnegie’s Maid” by Marie Benedict.

General Fiction – The richness of the descriptions and the characters in this story just captivated me. – “The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds” by Selina Siak Chin Yoke.

Fantasy – No competition here, my favorite was “The Lost Sentinel” by Suzanne Rogerson.

Plans for 2018 – So, 100 books is the goal for the year. I have decided to pose myself a challenge of reading all the books in a series I love during the year. For 2018, I have chosen the Charlie Parker Series by John Connolly, #JohnConnollyChallenge. I read the first 2 books late in 2017. There are a total of 16 books at this time so that means a little more than 1 book a month, I can do that, right????

Finally, I would love your input on what books to read in 2018. Leave your suggestion in the Comments and I’ll incorporate them somewhere. I hope you all have a Happy New Year and that you read lots of books.

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 12/24/2017

I hope you all are enjoying the Christmas festivities. We are having a quiet Christmas at my house this year. There is snow on the ground and the air is COLD. I did get all my Christmas shopping done but a final trip to the grocery store will be required before the big day tomorrow. I think I’ve made some progress this week so let’s take a look at the numbers.

TBR – Apparently I didn’t add any books and I finished reading 2, so the total is now 278.

NetGalley score – I finished a couple of NetGalley books this week so this number went up to 86%.

Goodreads challenge – I’m beginning to think I may not be successful this year. I still need to finish 6 books in the next week and I don’t usually read quite that fast but we’ll see how it all turns out next week.

Coming up – I do have 6 books that I am working on, 2 are audiobooks, and they are “The Tea Planter’s Wife” by Dinah Jefferies. The Tea Planter's WifeThe Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins. The Girl on the TrainPrivate” by James Patterson (audiobook). PrivateBrave New World” by Aldous Huxley (audiobook). Brave New WorldA Treacherous Curse” by Deanna Raybourn. A Treacherous Curse And, “Kings of Georgian Britain” by Catherine Curzon. Kings of Georgian Britain So that’s what I’m shooting for and I’ll check in next week and let you know if got through them all.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 12/17/2017

Greetings from a frigid North Dakota. We’re not quite to zero degrees but getting very close this week. My Christmas bread starts on Thursday and I can hardly wait. Two weeks of reading!!! Ok, a little holiday-making thrown in for variety. Let’s see what happened over the past week.

TBR – I added one book this week and finished reading 3 books (reviews coming). So new total is 282.

NetGalley – Score remains at 84%.

Goodreads Challenge – I am still 5 books behind but that’s because I haven’t yet updated by challenge for the 3 books I finished. So TECHNICALLY (as my son would say) I’m only 2 books behind.

Coming up – Reviews of “The Intercept” by Dick Wolf, The InterceptDark Hollow” by John Connolly, Dark Hollow and “Goat Castle” by Karen L. Cox. Goat Castle I’m currently reading “The Broken Girls” by Simone St. James, The Broken Girls and “Two Girls Down” by Louisa Luna. Two Girls Down

So that’s it for this week’s update. I’ll see you again next week!

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 12/10/2017

Here I am, ready to delve into the TBR and see what wonderful numbers it has today. It’s been cold here this week with a little bit of snow a few days ago. The heat went out in the building I work in, so that was a fun day. Ok, let’s dig into the numbers.

TBR – I finished reading 2 books this week (reviews coming soon). And I received SIX books from Pen & Sword Publishing. This, not surprisingly, has bumped the TBR up to a new high of 284! I love it, it was getting a little boring down there in the 270’s.  😇

Goodreads Challenge – As of today, I am 5 books behind schedule, but I will meet the challenge even if I have to skip the New Year’s Eve celebration to get the last one in. 😱

NetGalley Score – I’m slipping a little bit here too, with the score now down to 83%.

Coming Up – I will be finishing “Goat Castle” by Karen L. Cox Goat Castle I’m also hoping to finish “The Broken Girls” by Simone St. James The Broken Girls That’s it for today guys. I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season and that, unlike me, you have all your shopping done. See you next Sunday!

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 12/3/2017

Welcome to December! It’s getting colder here and the weatherman says we might get some snow tomorrow. I can hardly wait. 😢 I haven’t done as much reading this week as I had hoped too, because life happened, as it often does when I make advance plans. Got my Christmas decorations up though and that must count for something. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

TBR – Total is at 278. I added 4 books from NetGalley and finished 3. I guess I did more reading than I thought.

Goodreads Challenge – As of this morning I am 4 books behind schedule. It was 5 last week, so a slight improvement.

NetGalley Score – This number has dropped to 83% because of all the books I’ve received in the last couple of weeks.

Coming Up – I’m still working on “The Tea Planter’s Wife” by Dinah Jeffries. The Tea Planter's Wife I will also be reading “The Broken Girls” by Simone St. James. The Broken Girls I will continue to listen to “Dark Hollow” by John Connolly and maybe finish it. Dark Hollow I guess that’s about it. I hope everybody is enjoying the holiday season and I will catch up with you again next week.

Happy Reading and Listening!

Weekly Round-Up 11/19/2017

I may not have done much reading this week, but my son and I did manage to finish all his college application and I think that counts for something. Now on to holiday planning. I’m assuming you all saw my Mid-Week Book Haul on Wednesday and so we can anticipate that the numbers have taken a hit this week. So let’s take a look at how much damage was actually done.

TBR – I added 7 books to the TBR this week 😱. I finished reading 1 book. That brings us to the new total of 276. I guess that’s not sooo bad.

NetGalley Score – Since half of those books I acquired are from NetGalley, I did take a hit here. My score dropped from 86% to 84%.

Goodreads Challenge – This number distresses me the most. I am 5 books behind schedule as of this morning. I do have that 1 book that I finished that I haven’t written the review of yet, so technically I’m only 4 books behind, not much comfort really.

Coming Up – I hoping to make some movement on that challenge this week. We have Thanksgiving coming up on Thursday this week and I get 3 days off of work. Sounds like a good time to do some eating, I mean reading. 😎

My review of “Accessories to Die For” by Paula Paul will probably go up tomorrow. I anticipate finishing “X” by Sue Grafton later today so that review will be coming this week also. In the queue are “The Tea Planter’s Wife” by Dinah Jefferies, The Tea Planter's Wife and “A Lady in Shadows” by Lene Kaaberbol A Lady in Shadows I absolutely loved the first book in this series and I’m so excited to read this one that I think my family may have to starve until I finish reading it. That’s all I have for you today.

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 11/12/2017

Hello, Hello, Hello! and welcome to the Weekly Round-Up! It’s been cold here this week and we did get a little snow that didn’t really accumulate much. Weatherman says that this coming week the high temperatures will get above freezing again for a few days, so something to look forward to. In addition to reading, I’ve been helping my son to get his college applications in. So speaking of reading, let’s take a look at the numbers:

TBR – So I added 3 books to the TBR this week. I finished reading 4 books, Yay! TBR now stands at 270.

NetGalley score – 3 of the 4 books I finished were NetGalley books, but the 3 I added are also from NetGalley, so score is 87% again.

Goodreads challenge – I had a couple of days of panic when I started the week 5 books behind schedule. With the reading I did I was able to get that down to 3 books behind schedule today. 😖

Coming Up – I am currently listening to “Dark Hollow” by John Connolly. Dark Hollow Not sure I can finish it this week, but I’ll give it a try. I am reading “Accessories to Die For” by Paula Paul, one of my favorite cozy mystery writers. Accessories to Die For This one will be available Dec. 5 and I will publish my review on that date. I think I’m also going to try to finish “X” by Sue Grafton. X So that’s the plan. Check back next week to see if I stuck to it!

Happy Reading!

Weekly Round-Up 11/5/2017

Welcome back everybody! Time for another Round-Up. We got our first snow of the season this week here in ND and my son actually took it upon himself to clean the driveway, another first. I had a very good reading week, finishing 4 books, but I didn’t get all the reviews written, so I still have that to get caught up on. So let’s get into the details.

TBR – As mentioned I finished 4 books this week but I added 4 audiobooks to the list, so the grand total is 268.

Goodreads challenge – I am currently 2 books behind schedule.

NetGalley score – Currently at 86% but 2 of those finished books are from NetGalley so I expect a little bump when I get those posted.

Coming up – In the next couple days I will get my reviews of “Smoke and Mirrors” by Casey Daniels, “Treachery and Retribution” by Andrew Rawson, and “Poison” by Galt Niederhoffer. I’ve just started reading “The Stolen Marriage” by Diane Chamberlain The Stolen Marriage and I’m not sure what else I may get to this week. So that’s what I have for you right now. Hope you all have a good week.

Happy Reading!
