“A Trace of Copper” by Anne Renwick – Update

“A Trace of Copper” by Anne Renwick – Update

Blurb:

New recruit to the Queen’s agents, Dr. Piyali Mukherji is given a simple first assignment. Travel to the small Welsh village of Aberwyn and solve the mystery of a young woman’s blue skin lesion. A challenging task, for the alarming infection is unlike anything she’s seen before – and it’s spreading.

Evan Tredegar, the town’s pharmacist and the only man to ever capture her heart, knows more than he’s telling. Despite his efforts to push her away, her touch reawakens old desires. As more villagers fall victim to the strange disease, he’ll have no choice but to reveal his secrets, even if it means sacrificing his freedom.

Together they must move past broken promises, capture a rogue frog, and stop the infection before it spreads out of control.

My Thoughts:

This is an update to my previous review which you can read here. This is the first of Anne Renwick’s Elemental Web Tales to be released as an audiobook and if steampunk or romance is your thing, then you don’t want to miss this one. I loved this story when I originally read it but I enjoyed it even more as an audio book. The narrator is Anais Inara Chase and she has done a fantastic job with this book. The story felt even more dramatic and action packed with her narration. More books in the series will be coming out on audio with this narrator and I can’t wait to rediscover these stories through her voice.

“A Reflection of Shadows” by Anne Renwick

“A Reflection of Shadows” by Anne Renwick

Blurb:

Shunned for her odd eyes and an unnerving habit of slipping into shadows, Lady Colleen Stewart refuses to be caged–should she decide to marry, it’ll be for love and to a man of her choice. After all, she’d rather be racing over rooftops than waltzing across ballroom floors. So when the only man to ever tempt her heart invites her on a covert mission, she leaps into danger.

Nicholas Torrington, Queen’s agent, is running out of time. While work has him chasing his tail, his sister grows increasingly ill, and Colleen, the woman he would make his bride, has acquired another, determined suitor. To coax his favorite thief back into his arms, he’ll break every rule and lead her through the underbelly of London on a hunt for a mad scientist and a cure for his sister.

But the discovery of a burned-out laboratory provides more questions than answers, and they find themselves caught in a deadly game where they have become the prey. Surviving the ambitions of their pursuers will bring everything into sharp focus as they risk their very lives.

My Thoughts:

I love a little jaunt in Victorian England and Anne Renwick is the perfect author to go there with. Lady Colleen is a delightful character and her secret life makes her a definite mystery. Nicholas is a dashing gentleman and the two of them just can’t get enough of each other. I found their romance to be just too cute. As usual in these Elemental Web Tales, there are lots of gadgets and Colleen has some interesting places to hide things. These two will face mortal danger in their effort to get out from under Colleen’s uncle’s thumb. The story takes some intriguing turns along the way and was never boring. I continue to be delighted by Anne Renwick’s stories and look forward to many more. Highly recommend!

Paranormal Book Review: “Highway Thirteen to Manhatten” by Kourtney Heintz

Paranormal Book Review: “Highway Thirteen to Manhatten” by Kourtney Heintz

This is book 2 in the “Six Train to Wisconsin” series and is no less exciting than the first. Kai and Oliver are back and things between them are not good. Kai is experiencing changes in her powers which she struggles to understand. Oliver’s guilt about what happened in book 1 drives him to desperation and everyone around them seems to want them to break up. Kai turns to brother Caleb for support and understanding, while Oliver is still fighting his feelings for Mickey. What will become of their marriage?

I am once again very impressed by this author. The characters really come to life in her writing and the twists and turns just keep coming. As with the first book, I felt like I was struggling along with them to try to put things right. The author does a great job of incorporating the paranormal aspect into the story in a way that makes it feel natural to the characters and not just contrived for effect. In addition to the paranormal there is a healthy dose of romance and mystery to keep a wide range of readers happy. Give this series a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Mystery Book Review: “The Six Train to Wisconsin” by Kourtney Heintz

Mystery Book Review: “The Six Train to Wisconsin” by Kourtney Heintz

A mystery, a psychic, and a romance, all rolled into one really good story! Kai and Oliver are devoted to each other, but Kai is also a telepath and the voices in her head are making her suicidal. In a desperate attempt to save his wife from herself, Oliver kidnaps her and takes her to his family home in Wisconsin. But this won’t be a simple vacation for either of them. When Oliver’s past starts to catch up with him and a 4-year old boy goes missing, complicated secrets will be revealed and lives will be changed forever.

This book is the first in a series and that’s a good thing because I really enjoyed the story and the characters of Kai and Oliver. Their devotion to each other is inspiring and the romance comes off as an integral part of the story. Of course, the mystery was my favorite part and I just had to keep reading until I knew the whole story. The paranormal aspect added a nice twist and was seamlessly incorporated into the overall plot. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and mystery, paranormal and romance lovers can all find something they like with this one.

Book Review: “To Catch a Bad Guy” by Marie Astor

Book Review: “To Catch a Bad Guy” by Marie Astor

This is a fun little romance wrapped up in a securities fraud investigation. Janet Maples is a lawyer who has recently been downsized out of the District Attorney’s office. After a few months of unemployment, she accepts an offer to work with her childhood friend Lisa Foley in the legal department of Bostoff Securities. Lisa is more interested in marrying one of the Bostoff heirs than in doing any legal work, but Janet wants to actually be earning her paycheck. Janet thinks it pretty strange that Bostoff has a legal department but sends all the actual legal work out of house to Tom Wyman. When Janet receives notice of an upcoming audit she decides to review the client files to make sure all the paperwork is in order. Meanwhile, Dennis, the IT guy, is trying very hard to cozy up to Janet, but is he attracted to her or is there an ulterior motive. Janet’s loyalties and her heart will both be put to the test before this story is over.

I enjoyed this story, especially the interplay between the main characters. Janel and Lisa are such opposites and yet they have been best friends since childhood. Lisa is forever trying to match Janet up; Janet is forever trying to resist her efforts. I would classify this book as a legal romance with well-drawn characters and a relevant theme.

Book Review: “Violation of Faith” by Jeannie Hall

Book Review: “Violation of Faith” by Jeannie Hall

Lynea and Corinne have been living in fear for the last 3 years after they escaped from the Reverend, a murderous cult leader who after killing the girl’s parents, forced Lynea to marry him at the age of 12. They are finally beginning to settle in to life in a small-town where Corinne has been granted a scholarship to the local college. With a little help, Lynea gets a job working at the college’s library where she is assigned to work with the gorgeous Brennan Gage. Brennan also happens to be an expert in religious cults. The two are drawn to each other, neither realizing the danger they will soon be in. The Reverend has found his errant wife and is plotting his revenge.

I found this book really engaging. The story kept bringing thrills and danger and the romance side was not overdone or predictable. The characters have great personalities and the evil Reverend is expertly drawn. I think the religious cult aspect and the tragedy within the story gives this romance an edge over its peers.

Book Review: “Dying to Keep It” by Donna Thompson

Book Review: “Dying to Keep It” by Donna Thompson

Brea was abandoned as an infant and raised in the foster care system. So was her boyfriend Ben. In fact, that’s all they have in common when they decide to buy a B&B, sight unseen, in rural Maine. Ben turns tail and runs as soon as he sees the place. When Brea inadvertently finds millions of dollars hidden in the structure, Ben comes back looking for more than his share. Then he turns up dead and Brea becomes the prime suspect. Not only is she being investigated by the police but Toby, a very handsome local private investigator, is also checking her out. In more ways than one. Will Brea be able to clear her name before she too ends up dead? Will she ever be accepted into the community? Is there a future for her and Toby?

The answers await you in the pages of this mystery/romance. I really couldn’t help but like Brea and Toby, while at the same time wondering who was trying to kill them. The storyline has some nice twists and was engaging throughout. Overall, this is a good read as a mystery and as a romance.

Alinefromabook’s rating: THUMBS-UP for great characters and an intriguing plot.

Book Review: “An Angel Healed” by Annalisa Russo

But first, he will have to clear her of a murder charge. Can Rafe and Hope overcome the obstacles and finally make a family together?

This book is the second in a series but also stands on its own. The characters of Rafe and Hope were so likable right from the beginning and just kept growing on me as I read. The Cavelli family is a wonderful support system for these two as their relationship progresses. The story is engaging from the start and you can’t help but root for these two.

Alinefromabook’s recommendation: THUMBS-UP for a great love story with a little mystery thrown in. A worthy read!

Book Review: “Detour Amour” by Jack Dancer

Book Review: “Detour Amour” by Jack Dancer

Wow! That’s what I was thinking when I turned the last page of this book. The story was creative and original and I really enjoyed it. The description says it’s a romance from the male perspective, which it is, but it is also an action book. If you expect your romances to be all hearts and flowers, then this is not the book for you, but if you’re willing to take a risk on a new perspective, then definitely pick up a copy. I will say that this is book 3 in a trilogy and I felt a little lost at the very beginning because I had not read the previous books, so you may want to go start with book 1. That being said, this book stands on its own as a great story. The action takes place in Barcelona and the surrounding area. Tucker Blue is on a mission to rescue his girlfriend, Monica, after she has been kidnapped by the Raven. When a ransom payment goes wrong he finds himself reluctantly partnered up with the beautiful Nanette as they launch an attack on the castle where Monica is being held. It’s a wild ride of a story with twists and turns all over the place.

Who would enjoy this book?: Anyone who likes action stories with beautiful girls involved. Guys should not be put off by the romance part of the description.

What age is this book appropriate for?: This is an adult only book. There is graphic violence and sex.

Alinefromabook’s recommendation: THUMBS-UP. This is not my usual thing but I’m glad I stepped out of my box on this one, because I really enjoyed the story.
