“Echoes from Death” by Helen Hanson

“Echoes from Death” by Helen Hanson

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

The Cruise FBI Thriller series just keeps getting better with “Echoes from Death” which is Book 3. Claudia and Baxter are back again and better than ever. This installment has them in Mazatlan, where Claudia is hoping to finally solve the mystery of Ravi’s death. It’s 10 years later, but an informant has come forward and Claudia gets permission to pursue it, unofficially. What neither Claudia or Baxter know is just how dangerous this search will be.

In this installment, Claudia and Baxter are finally a couple and I find their relationship to be really sweet. When she’s with Baxter, Claudia can finally let down the FBI tough guy stance and be herself. Baxter meanwhile, is so supportive and seems to have a 6th sense for what Claudia needs from him. This is a thriller so romance is low on the list, but I am really enjoying how this relationship is growing with each book. That being said, there are plenty of thrills and danger in this story. Whether on land or on sea, these two will not give up until justice is done. Helen Hanson fans will definitely love this book and if you haven’t tried her yet, you can’t go wrong with this series.

Thriller Book Review: “Spider Games” by Helen Hanson

Thriller Book Review: “Spider Games” by Helen Hanson

Spider Games, book 2 in the Cruise FBI thriller series, really packs a punch. Once again, Helen Hanson has given us a story full of action and suspense. Baxter Cruise is a grad student and a drone genius. Having recently lost his mentor in an accident, and with no family to help him grieve, he uses his work on drones as an outlet. Claudia Seagal, FBI agent, and Baxter have recently starting seeing each other, but their budding relationship is in question when Baxter is accused of a bombing which almost took Claudia’s life. Meanwhile, Claudia is searching for two missing girls who were lured from their home only to become slaves to labor brokers. Is there a connection between the missing girls and the bomb? Claudia and Baxter will need all their skills to untangle this spider’s web.

I was instantly charmed by Baxter and his unassuming personality. However, it took me a little while to warm up to Claudia. I was very concerned in the beginning that she might be too jaded for Baxter, but I was proved wrong as the story progresses. I thought the appearance of Clint Masters, from the Clint Masters series, was pretty cool; I enjoy seeing an author’s characters overlapping with each other. The plotline was twisty and had bracing action scenes throughout. The story has a good flow and kept me completely engaged. This is the second book by this author that I have read and once again I am impressed by her storytelling skills. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Book Review: “3 Lies” by Helen Hanson

Book Review: “3 Lies” by Helen Hanson

I was on the edge of my seat with this story. Clint Masters is planning to take his girlfriend, Beth, out sailing for the day. When he arrives at her door expecting breakfast, she’s not there. His first thought is that he’s been stood up, after all they’ve only been dating a couple of months. But his affection for her keeps him curious and his questions begin to reveal that something sinister is going on, and Beth’s life is in danger.

I was a little annoyed with Clint and his attitude at the beginning but as the story unfolds and his devotion to Beth becomes clear he became a hero in my eyes. Beth is a dialysis patient, a fact that her captors are unaware of. If she doesn’t get to a machine within the next couple of days, her blood will become toxic and her body will shut down. Beth’s body may be fragile but her spirit is tough as nails and she is not going down without a fight. What neither one of them knows could get them both killed.

The story is told from four perspectives. Clint’s is primary as we follow him through his investigation. Pieces start to fall in place as the captor’s, Beth and CIA operatives each tell the story from their separate perspectives. I absolutely loved this story which is the first in a series. It took me a couple of chapters to really get into it, but once this story took off there was no slowing it down. Clint and Beth are both good people caught up in circumstances NOT of their own making.

Alinefromabook’s recommendation: THUMBS-UP! For believable and likable good guys, and lots of twists and thrills.
