Book Review: “Defending Jacob” by William Landay

Looking for a little legal drama? This story is packed full of it! Jacob is an ordinary middle schooler with an extraordinary problem. When one of his classmates is found murdered in the park next to his school, Jacob becomes the prime suspect. “Defending Jacob” tells the story of his arrest and prosecution from the perspective of Jacob’s father, who happens to be the Assistant DA assigned to the case. As the evidence begins to come in, a new DA is assigned, one who seems to have it in for Jacob’s family. The DA thinks that because Jacob’s grandfather is a convicted murderer Jacob must be also. Will the Barber family be able to make a defense? How does a family recover from this kind of accusation? You’ll have to read the story to find the answers and this one is full of twists you won’t see coming.

I found this story really intriguing. The description of Jacob’s arrest just made me feel so scared for him, and the story feels so real that I couldn’t help but wonder, “What if this happened to my son?.” This one will pull you in right from the start and keep you guessing right up to the last page.

Who would enjoy this book?: Lovers of legal dramas and mysteries would enjoy this one.

What age group is it appropriate for?: This might be a little traumatic for younger teenagers but fine for mature audiences.

Alinefromabook’s recommendation: THUMBS-UP!
